In-situ Toxicity Testing Services

Occasionally, laboratory toxicity testing cannot adequately answer a specific question. Pollutech has unique experience in providing toxicity testing on location (in situ), exposing test animals to the whole environment, not just a sample of it. All variables of the location influence the results, including sediment, water, sunlight, daily variation in temperatures, storms, and interaction with other species. Pollutech has completed a number of in situ toxicity tests, each tailored to the specific needs of the client.
 
Examples of in-situ toxicity assessments are summarized as follows:
  • Set-up and conducted taste and odour panel evaluations of fish exposed to industrial waste waters along the St. Clair River;
  • Set-up and conducted a long-term (25 months) flow-through study to monitor rainbow trout growth and histopathological responses to determine the impact of industrial and municipal waste water discharges, as well as agricultural and urban runoff waters on the water quality of the St. Clair River;
  • Designed, set-up and conducted a series of flow-through rainbow trout egg incubation trials to determine the impact of industrial and municipal waste water discharges as well as urban and agricultural runoff waters on the water quality of the St. Clair River;
  • Designed, set-up and implemented a Daphnia magna and D. pulex survival and reproductive study in a flow-through design. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of industrial and municipal waste water discharges as well as urban and agricultural runoff waters on water quality of the St. Clair River;
  • Designed and implemented a mult-generational fathead minnow experimental study to monitor survival, fecundity and histopathological responses in a flow-through set-up to determine the impact of industrial and municipal waste water discharges as well as urban and agricultural runoff waters on water quality of the St. Clair River;
  • Completion of rainbow trout in-situ exposures within the St. Clair River for assessment of estrogenic activity;
  • Designed and implemented sediment toxicity evaluation comparing established fathead minnow whole sediment toxicity test methods to methods developed for in-situ assessment;
  • Set-up and conducted numerous taste and odour panel evaluations of fish exposed to industrial waste waters along the St. Clair River.
