Routine Toxicity Tests Performed

The summary below outlines those toxicity tests routinely completed by Pollutech. 
 
Acute Toxicity Test
  • Rainbow trout 96-hour single-concentration toxicity test according to the criteria outlined in the "Biological Test Method: Reference Method for Determining Acute Lethality of Effluents to Rainbow Trout", Report EPS 1/RM/13, Second Edition (December 2000, with May 2007 amendments).
  • Rainbow trout 96-hour LC50 toxicity test according to the criteria outlined in the "Biological Test Method: Reference Method for Determining Acute Lethality of Effluents to Rainbow Trout", Report EPS 1/RM/13, Second Edition (December 2000, with May 2007 amendments) and "Biological Test Method; Acute Lethality Test Using Rainbow Trout", Report EPS1/RM/9 (July 1990 with May 1996 and May 2007 Amendments).
  • Daphnia magna 48-hour single-concentration toxicity test according to the procedure "Biological Test Method: Reference Method for Determining Acute Lethality of Effluents to Daphnia magna", Report EPS 1/RM/14, Second Edition (December 2000).

Chronic Toxicity Tests
  • Ceriodaphnia dubia 3-brood reproduction and survival toxicity test, based upon the protocol "Biological Test Method: Test of Reproduction and Survival Using the Cladoceran Ceriodaphnia dubia", Report EPS 1/RM/21, Second Edition (February 2007).
  • Fathead minnow 7-day larval growth and survival toxicity test, based upon the protocol "Biological Test Method: Test of Larval Growth and Survival Using Fathead Minnows" Report EPS1/RM/22 second edition, (February 2011).
  • Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata 72-hour growth toxicity test, based upon the protocol "Biological Test Method: Growth Inhibition Test Using a Freshwater Alga", Report EPS1/RM/25, Second Edition (March 2007).
  • Lemna minor 7-day growth toxicity test, based on the protocol "Biological Test Method: Test Method for Measuring the Inhibition of Growth Using the Freshwater Macrophyte, Lemna minor", Report EPS 1/RM/37, Second Edition (January 2007).
Sediment Toxicity Tests
  • Amphipod Hyalella azteca 14-day survival and growth whole sediment toxicity test, as per the protocol "Biological Test Method: Test for Survival and Growth in Sediment Using the Freshwater Amphipod Hyalella azteca", Report EPS 1/RM/33, (December 1997).
  • Midge Chironomus dilitus (formerly Chironomus tentans) 10-day survival and growth whole sediment toxicity test, as per the protocol titled "Biological Test Method: Test for Survival and Growth in Sediment Using the Larvae of Freshwater Midges (Chironomus tentans or Chironomus riparius)", Report EPS 1/RM/32 (December 1997).
  • Hexagenia limbata 21-day survival and growth whole sediment toxicity test, as per the Ontario protocol titled "Ontario Ministry of the Environment Laboratory Sediment Biological Testing Protocol, Water Resources Branch, Ontario Ministry of Environment, Toronto" (Bedard et al., 1992).
  • Tubifex tubifex sediment toxicity test applyies two test methods, ASTM method E 1383 - 94a "Standard Guide for Conducting Sediment Toxicity tests with Freshwater Invertebrates" & Reynoldson TB, Thompson SP, Bamsey JL (1991) A Sediment Bioassay Using the Tubificid Oligochaete Worm Tubifex tubifex. Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry: Vol. 10, No. 8 pp. 1061–1072.
  • Fathead minnow 21-day mortality and bioaccumulation whole sediment toxicity test, as per the Ontario protocol titled "Ontario Ministry of the Environment Laboratory Sediment Biological Testing Protocol, Water Resources Branch, Ontario Ministry of Environment, Toronto" (Bedard et al., 1992).
Soil Toxicity Tests
  • Springtail Folsomia candida 28-day whole soil reproduction and survival toxicity test, as described in "Biological Test Method: Test for Measuring Survival and Reproduction of Springtails Exposed to Contaminants in Soil", Report EPS 1/RM/47 (September 2007).
  • Earthworm Eisenia andrei 14-day whole soil toxicity test as described in "Biological Test Method: Tests for Toxicity of Contaminated in Soil to Earthworms (Eisenia andrei, Eisenia fetida, or Lumbricus terrestris)", Report EPS 1/RM/43 (June 2004 with June 2007 amendments).
In addition, other requests are routinely addressed using a variety of procedural sources including Environment Canada, Ontario Ministry of the Environment, U.S. EPA, ASTM, OECD and ISO.  For some applications, customized toxicity testing procedures are developed drawing upon elements of existing procedures and applied to the client's specialized requirements.
